The objective of the study was to experimentally test a developmental prototype automobile air bag restraint system using human subjects. Seven different barrier crash impact profiles were studied using thirteen healthy young male volunteers seated in the right front passenger position. Experimental data were collected at impact velocities ranging from 15.1 to 31.5 miles per hour to determine the operational performance characteristics of the air bag, subject dynamic interaction with the air bag, subjective evaluation, and trauma encountered during the experiment. The findings of this investigation are summarized.
