The problem of an aircraft making an automatic intercept of an I.L.S. localizer has been further examined following a treatment of the subject in a report issued by Special Committee 79 of the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA SC-79). An alternative method of calculating the minimum range at which intercept of the localizer must start is presented. This demands that the aircraft start the intercept at a greater range than with the method used in SC79, but the overshoot of the course line is only about one half of that previously allowed. This better beam joining performance is highly desirable for I.C.A.O. Category II operations and could be essential for Category III operation. (Author)
