The report describes work which was performed preparatory to the testing of free running radio controlled ship models in natural sea conditions in San Francisco Bay. The work comprises two parts: theoretical analysis employs both linear and non-linear mathematical models to describe the motion of the ship in waves. The linear procedure has not yet led to final results and work is continuing. The experimental preparations include the evaluation of radio control equipment, ship motion monitoring and recording instruments, wave measuring arrays, and the design of a catamaran test platform.
