The use of multibeam arrays for mobile communication satellites and its impact on system performance are discussed. In the case of communications with small mobile terminals (e.g. aircraft, ships, spacecraft), the gain of the antenna system must be optimized in order to relieve the small terminals of costly gain and/or power requirements. Designs involving reflector antennas provide relatively low gains, and significant improvement (typically 6 db) can be obtained by using arrays. Complexity is increased, but so is flexibility. Frequency re-use becomes possible and graceful degradation is assured. The front end constituents are described, and the problems related to the array are discussed, including those of element selection, performance prediction, and measurements. Typical examples are given to show the improvements expected from the use of arrays on communication satellites. Growth potential of such systems and related critical areas are discussed.
