A composite summary analysis was made of the height-velocity (H-V) diagram test data obtained from the flight testing of three single engine, sinle rotor helicopters of varying design characteristics and basic parameters. The purpose of this analysis was to ascertain if a practical method for the determination of the H-V diagram could be evolved, as well as a means to determine the effects of aircraft weight and altitude on the H-V diagram. Analysis disclosed that H-V diagrams can be developed for any conventional single rotor helicopter by the flight test determination of a single maximum performance critical speed (V sub cr) point in conjunction with the use of a non-dimensional curve and the solution of specific key point ratios which are set forth in the report. An evaluation of the H-V diagram key point relationships is presented followed by a discussion of the observed factors affecting autorotative landing following power failure. A suggested step by step procedure for flight manual type H-V diagrams is also presented. (Author)
