This report describes an analysis of Coast Guard surface patrol resource capability in the coastal maritime environment (0 to 200 nmi) of the U.S. The report looks broadly at the operational requirment generated by Coast Guard missions, but focuses on the operational niche from 50 to 100 nmi offshore, where functional needs for an economical general purpose surface patrol resource may exist over the foreseeable future. This operational niche is currently filled by the 82-foot POINT-Class Patrol Boat (PB), which provides approximately 1500 operating hours per unit annually with a nominal endurance of 3 days and a crew of 10. Built between 1960 and 1970, the 82-foot PB class is nearing the end of a 30-year life expectancy.
