A reed switch based thermocouple multiplexer for use inside gas cooled nuclear reactors is developed. Experiments have been carried out to determine the feasibility of operating reed switches at typical temperatures and pressures found in operating AGRs. The survivability of reed switches under reactor transient temperature conditions has also been assessed. The emphasis has been on measuring the variation of the pull-in and drop-out field characteristics of the reed switches. (Copyright (c) Central Electricity Generating Board, 1988.)
