The locomotive/caboose crashworthiness program is a part of the rail crashworthiness program sponsored by the Federal Railroad Administration to develop guidelines and performance specifications with low cost impacts for rail vehicle structural integrity, interior and exterior configurations, and operational procedures. The goal is to reduce crew and passenger fatalities and injuries and to minimize property damage due to rail car collisions. The locomotive/caboose crashworthiness program has been divided into two phases: (1) Study of the mechanics of train collision involving a locomotive and a caboose; (2) design analysis and test evaluation of protection system for locomotives.
