The Air Traffic Management (ATM) system is to be defined. The components and interfaces are described. The current situation in air transportation is characterized by an increasing traffic volume, more and more beyond the capacity limits of the present Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. To increase the available capacity the ATC system of the future is to be understood as a part of the ATM. This applies to air traffic flow management optimizing the usage of the available resources regarding the components of the air traffic system, the ATC, and the airspace users.
