The objectives of the project are to (1) develop a data base of information on cargo transport via railways and ports in Russia, (2) identify major issues which affect private sector investment and involvement in rehabilitation and modernization, (3) identify planned or proposed future rail and port investments which might be of interest to US investors and/or suppliers, and (4) conduct a seminar in Washington DC to bring together potential US investors and suppliers with high-level Russian officials to discuss potential areas of joint action. The desk study recommended that the U.S. Trade and Development Program (TDP) provide the Ministry of Transport with a grant of US$650,000 to carry out a study of the Russian railway and port systems by a joint Russian and American team consisting of Ministry of Transport staff and CSX/Sealand.
