Model tests to develop satisfactory filling and emptying systems for the navigation lock at Port Allen, Louisiana, which will connect the Mississippi River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, are described in this report. Side-wall ports of the system were isolated and studied on a preliminary section model, and the entire hydraulic system was tested on a composite model simulating all essential features of the prototype lock structure. Both models were constructed to scales of 1:25. Revised designs that provided satisfactory performance were developed for the intake and discharge manifolds. Studies of the lock-chamber wall ports resulted in adoption of a 2-ft-deep recess in front of each of the 46 ports to improve flow conditions during lock-filling operations. Deflectors were used in the 22 upstream recesses to reduce hawser stresses during filling operations.
