The report discusses the design of an airborne search radar for detection of small boats in sea clutter. The operational requirements of the desired radar are stated, previous airborne radar design practice reviewed and radar performance models postulated. The models are used to predict performance of detection of a small boat in sea clutter, and the results are used to specify two radar systems, one sidelooking and one scanning, to satisfy the operational requirements. Cost factors for both systems are discussed, and recommended plans for development of proposed systems are presented. (Author)
