The high-speed impact of combustion residues from a N2O4-MMH rocket motor on an aluminum bar placed in the plume 4 ft downstream of the nozzle resulted in an erosion of the polished metal surface. Craters approximately 6 microns in diameter in the core and 2 microns toward the outer boundary of the plume were observed. Although a larger quantity of products was found in the center region, craters were more numerous yet smaller in size in the periphery of the plume. The combustion residues appear to travel in a straight line after leaving the rocket nozzle. A protective coverong of filter paper placed on certain sections of the aluminum bar was sufficient to cushion the impact of the exhaust particles, leaving the polished metal surface unmarked even near the center of the plume. The major product found on the surface was identified by infrared and differential thermal analyses as monomethylhydrazinium nitrate. (Author)
