The Air Force proposes to deploy 200 Small ICBMs within the 341st Strategic Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB Montana beginning in 1992. The missiles would be carried and protected by special vehicles called Hard Mobile Launchers (HMLs). The HMLs would be deployed within expanded fenced areas that surround existing Minuteman launch facilities. Currently, 200 launch facilities, located throughout an 8,5000-square-mile (sq mi) area in north-central Montana, are supported by Malmstrom AFB. Some HMLs would also be located at Malmstrom AFB for training, maintenance, and repair purposes. Land would be acquired adjacent to existing launch facilities to accommodate expansions, and adjacent to the base to accommodate new military family housing and a HML vehicle operations training area. Existing explosive safety restrictive easements surrounding launch facilities would be expanded. To facilitate transportation fo HMLs to and from deployment sites, the road system (including bridges and culverts) used for the Minuteman program may be improved where necessary to enhance vehicle clearance and weight-bearing capability.
