The degree of compromise between the human engineer and the physiologist is a function of space flight duration. Short trips will permit the designing of the space capsule and its internal environment with a minimal degree of comfort to the human passenger. Medium length trips of interplanetary magnitude will require a duplicate of man's comfortable terrestrial environment, if he is to operate optimally as a scientific observer, capable of high performance levels. Extended interstellar space travel may not require the presence of incessant human intelligence, so that aids for ultimate survival are drawn from considerations of pharmacologic agents, hypothermia, adaptation, and yoga.
