To measure the lift on the tip vanes of a rotating model (nearly impossible in the wind tunnel because the centrifugal force exceeds the lift force by 500 times) a measuring device was designed and built to operate under water in a towing tank. The measured quantities are the radial force on one tip vane and the torque to drive the model, from which respectively the lift and drag coefficient of the tip vane are deduced. This was done for several settings of tip vane angles for tip-speed ratios from 4 to 13 by unity steps. For better turbine simulation a gauze was added behind the model, but all settings were also measured without gauze. The results are suitable for comparison with a time averaged theory.
