In the world of controlled electrical drives the inverter-fed asynchronous machine is gaining importance because of the small number of parts subject to wear. For traction purposes there is the additional advantage of the relatively small dimensions of the asynchronous machine which make it possible to accommodate more motor power within the bogies. In the project a model is derived for the combination machine-inverter. The report describes a number of pulsewidth modulated waveforms and explains how these are realized in an experimental traction installation for the Dutch Railways using micro-processor techniques. The simulated results are compared with measurements carried out at the traction-installation. The resemblance appears to be very good.
