A major premise of this study is that the automobile interior presents a hostile environment to a large segment of the population involved in motor vehicle accidents and that further understanding of the influence of vehicle interior design principles for reducing the effects of impact may further reduce crash injury consequences. About one-half of all deaths and about one in five disability injuries are attributable to the motor vehicle. This study was initiated for the following purposes: (1) To define research programs needed to provide a significant increase in level of protection for occupants of passenger cars. (2) To review the data to establish what is available and relevant to formulation of new vehicle safety standards and outline research programs needed for this purpose. (Author)
