This note presents a summary of the evidence on the fares elasticity of demand for bus travel; that is, the responsiveness of bus patronage to changes in the level of fares. It shows that there is a substantial body of evidence suggesting that the average fare elasticity is -0.3; or in other words, a 10% increase in real fares leads to a 3% reduction in bus patronage.
