The Battle of Coral Sea is known primarily as the first major sea-battle in which opposing ships never sighted each other because all actions were by aircraft. But a study of Japanese operational planning for the battle and subsequent decisionmaking during the battle yields lessons applicable to future operational planners and commanders.
