The problems associated with flight fires in supersonic transport aircraft include most of the factors present in conventional aircraft as well as some additional problems caused in part by the high temperatures produced by supersonic flight and new design concepts. The possibility that the major fuel storage areas may be in the fuselage poses probelms different from those associated with conventional wing tanks. This study constists of a laboratory investigation in three parts: (1) the study of luminous reactions and flames in the systems JP-4-air, JP-6-air, n-decane-air, and low volatility fuel-air as a function of fuel-air-ratio, temperature and pressure; (2) the investigation of ignition characteristics for these fuel-air mixtures during simulated descent patterns of the SST aircraft; and (3) a determination of the effects of additives on ignition and flame properties of these fuel-air mixtures under condition anticipated for the supersonic transport.
