Research was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using remote sensing to discover ice build-up on the wings of aircraft. The study methodology assessed the application of millimeter wave radiometry to this problem. The molecular absorption mechanism of ice was investigated and the radiometric heating of the reflected sky temperature was analyzed. Additionally, adverse weather and radiometric signal variations were considered. Results reveal that a Dicke radiometer appears promising and might provide all-weather performance when positioned within 300 meters of the aircraft.
