Air Force 1985 communication traffic requirements were defined for a representative tactical deployment model depicting an Air Force Component of a Joint Force supporting a two-corps Field Army. The traffic requirements include estimates of ground point-to-point, inter-node traffic, as well as ground-air-ground and air-to-air traffic of all types as related to a scenario of mission activity and events. All communication traffic, operational and administrative, throughout the Air Force Component and with interfacing elements of the Joint Force was included. Force level and traffic estimates were defined for three snapshot time periods representing the build-up of the deployed force from the initial deployment through the ultimate peak force size. Traffic estimates represented busy-hour loads for a high-activity day. The estimates also included a definition of essential communication requirements that would apply under stressed conditions in which performance degradation is forced by hostile action and/or communication equipment failure. The impact of the traffic requirements on communication equipment quantities and capabilities was studied for different trunk network layout configurations.
