In 1992, Federal, State and highway industry representatives collaborated in the creation of a National Policy on the Quality of Highways. The focus of this policy is to enable the United States to maintain its leadership role in providing quality highways by providing 'a durable, smooth, safe, aesthetically pleasing, environmentally sensitive, efficient, and economical highway system.' The National Quality Initiative Steering Committee recently commissioned a survey, funded by the Federal Highway Administration, to determine the general public's satisfaction with the nation's highway system and to identify the public's priorities for highway improvement. This report provides the results of this survey.
