The purpose of the study was to assess the postcrash injury consequences to motorcycle drivers and passengers. Of particular concern was an evaluation of the differences in frequency, severity and location of injuries between riders wearing a safety helmet and riders not wearing a helmet at the time of a motorcycle crash. A second study objective was to assess the impact of the repeal of the Colorado helmet use law in terms of helmet and protective eye equipment use throughout the state. The majority of the data collection activities were undertaken and completed during the months of July, August and September of 1976, prior to repeal of the mandatory helmet law, and during those same months of 1977, subsequent to repeal of the law. Analysis of the data extended well into the Spring of 1978, while preparation, writing and typing of the final report were not completed until August of 1978.
