The traffic safety effects of the proposed measures of the National Traffic Safety Program were assessed. The results of the study show that if none of the program's proposed measures is implemented within the coming five-year period, (1988-1993), the number of traffic casualties in accidents reported to the police will be 4,000 more at the end of the period compared to today. An increase in car traffic of the size prevailing during 1985-1987 (5-6% per year) would result in 6,000 more casualties by 1993. A maximum effort concerning the problem of speed adaptation could compensate for the expected expansion of traffic (3-4% per year). The work that would be involved would be comparable with the information, education and surveillance program that was carried out in connection with the changeover to right-hand traffic.
