The Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications-3 (OSTA-3) Payload was the second in a series of shuttle payloads that carried experiments to make measurements of the Earth to fly on the Shuttle. OSTA-3 was launched on October 5, 1984, at 7:03 EDT from the Kennedy Space Center on the Space Transportation System (STS) Flight 41-G. The OSTA-3 Payload consisted of three Earth resources applications experiments and one technology experiment. Of these four experiments, three were reflights from the OSTA-1 Payload flown aboard the second ST'S flight in November 1981. The fourth experiment was the Large Format Camera, which flew for the first time on this mission. The OSTA-3 Payload was designed to utilize the Shuttle's unique capabilities as a platform for research and applications while demonstrating the capabilities of new sensors and technology for Earth remote sensing. The Earth remote sensing data collected by the OSTA-3 experiments have application in many areas including geology, oceanography, meteorology, vegetation monitoring, and cartography.
