Since its beginning in 2005, NASA’s Centennial Challenges Program, at the time of publication of this paper, has initiated 20 challenges in technology, innovation development areas including: propulsion, robotics, communication and navigation, human health, destination systems, science instrumentation, nanotech, materials and structures and aerodynamics. As NASA moves toward the goal of a sustainable lunar presence, the agency is investing in new open innovation crowdsourcing challenges through the Centennial Challenges Program to cultivate new ideas from the public and address current technology gaps while also advancing technology for terrestrial applications.
