A review of the evolution of operational meteorological rockets is presented to indicate the improvements with successive systems and the reasons for the multitude of rocket probes now in Government inventory. The development of a unified rocket system capable of making at least three types of atmospheric soundings is described. This system, called the Super Loki-Dart, is shown to have superior characteristics to those vehicles it will replace. By standarization of this rocket system for use by all U.S. agencies, significant reductions in expendable costs of the Meteorological Rocket Network will be accomplished. (Author)
