The large investment required to build a new high speed ground transportation system in the U.S. requires that the station component of such a system receive considerably more attention than it has so far. If the stations are not numerous, located well and designed properly, the competitive status of the high speed system cannot attain its full potential. In this report, attention is given to defining the role of stations in the high speed (rail and/or maglev) planning process. Intermodal access requirements and opportunities, competitive position with regard to the air and auto modes, long-term urban form impacts, environmental and community acceptance problems and joint development opportunities are investigated. Several physical design issues are also examined. The objectives of this study are to (1) review previous experience with and literature on the design of intermodal stations and (2) develop some prototype high speed station designs. A literature review is followed by reports on field investigations of five best practice urban transit stations in the U.S. as well as five large Train a Grande Vitesse (TGV) stations in France. The challenges associated with locating high speed stations in U.S. suburban activity centers are examined in relation to these results and special attention is given to their intermodal connectivity requirements. The potential utility of an automated peoplemover technology as a feeder mode to such stations and as a circulator system within the suburban activity center is investigated extensively. Two prototype intermodal station designs are devised and presented in some detail.
