The paper presents some considerations of importance to the proper design of new transportation system demonstrations focusing on Dial-A-Ride, a door-to-door transportation service without fixed routes or schedules. This new service, midway in character and cost between bus and taxi service, consists of a fleet of small vehicles assigned to pick up riders who have called for service. Chapter One of the paper discusses the need for well planned, controlled experimentation in the introduction of new transit systems or services through demonstration programs. Chapter two considers the experimental design planning for Dial-A-Ride demonstrations in particular. (Author)
