The Position Keeping System installed on the USNS Mission Capistrano is a complex device designed and built for the purpose of stationing a ship and holding heading at points in the deep ocean. In essence, it represents a readily deployable moor where the holding action is accomplished by dynamic means. The object of the present report is to describe partially the operating features of the system and to document the performance characteristics as measured during two tests in 1967. Estimates are also provided to show the expected effects present performance characteristics have on experimental usage of the ship. (Author)
