This report presents the development of railroad brake system dynamic models and the results of an experimental study of the effects of water and ice on brake friction. Dynamic computer models account for brake signal propagation through a pneumatic air line, for pressure gradients associated with brake line leakage, brake system application, and stopping distance. Models are exercised and it is found that results compare well with a limited amount of available experimental data. Dynamometer studies of composition and cast metal shoes show that water and ice contamination can significantly affect braking performance. Water on composition shoes can increase train stopping distance by a factor of two; in contrast, even small amounts of water on cast iron shoes can decrease stopping distance by as much as 25%. Ice on brake shoes can increase stopping distance by a factor of 17 when compared with dry shoes.
