The report describes the results obtained from a Mode 'C' data collection conducted at CRNA Sud-Est, Aix-en-Provence, to assess aircraft height-keeping stability at high altitudes over mountainous areas. A total of 1072 different flights were monitored by a dedicated task observer provided with facilities for monitoring and interviewing aircraft. Sixty-five flights were observed with assigned altitude deviations (AAD) of 300ft or more; Flight Technical Error (FTE) was responsible, or partially responsible, for a large proportion of these deviations. Statistical analysis of the total data collected (monitored and unmonitored flights operating at FL 290 and above), based on more than 9600 different flights, shows a good general overall quality of height-keeping, with Mode 'C' within the range CFL + 100ft for 98% of total flight time and within the range CFL + or - 200ft for more than 99% of total flight time.
