As a result of heavy competition in the automotive industry great efforts are made in respect of optimizing weight, whilst at the same time the objective is to achieve a high degree of reliability in functional efficiency. In particular, this applies to safety parts which include vehicle axles. By using the front axle of a commercial vehicle as an example, it is explained how, on the basis of service strength calculations, optimum designs can be achieved. The paper discusses the criteria relevant for service strength calculations and the respective dimensioning procedures.
