Area traffic control (ATC) aims to improve existing traffic systems in the sense that additional capacity is provided through the implementation of optimal signal settings. In this report an analysis is initially made of the existing ATC systems whereafter the cost involved in implementing various forms of ATC systems is dealt with. A simplified method to evaluate the effectiveness of an ATC system once it has been implemented, is proposed and the report concludes with a set of recommendations regarding the implementation and procedure for implementation of an ATC system.
