The study was an evaluation of whether an Advanced Train Control System (ATCS) helped, hindered or was neutral with respect to the train handling and operating rule observance of locomotive engineers. Thirty engineers were randomly assigned to three groups representing the use of (1) an ATCS display, (2) an alternative display, and (3) conventional track warrants with a printed track profile. The performance of the subjects was then assessed as they operated the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Research and Locomotive Evaluator/Simulator (RALES) located at the IIT Research Institute (IITRI).
