A large amount of piston and metal bladder work was performed during the development of a variable-thrust sustainer for the Army Missile A feasibility program. The propellant expulsion device in this case was required to operate under conditions of a high spin rate, high boost acceleration, and zero sustain acceleration. A successful flight test program verified the design techniques developed for this system. Other studies have included a 54-in.-diameter torus of 6-in. cross-section used to expel Freon in a thrust vector control application, and 12.5-in.-diameter piston tanks for gel propellant expulsion.
