The present study focused specifically on the Hispanic community and its location, characteristics, transportation needs, and relative accessibility to public transit services. The purpose of this multi-phased research project was to assess the extent of under-utilization of public transportation by Hispanics and investigate its causes. Phase I examined relationships between Hispanic utilization of public transportation and 'physical barriers effects,' while Phase II examined the role various 'socio-cultural access barriers' play in reducing Hispanic utilization of public transportation. The objective was to expand our understanding of the transportation needs of Hispanics, which, in turn, will enable transportation systems and other government programs to target more directly the particular needs and problems of various Hispanic sub-groups. The three urban areas selected for study purposes were Chicago, Denver, and San Antonio.
