Vehicle actuated signal control is generally accepted as the optimum signal control strategy at isolated intersections. The paper describes recent research on defining isolated intersections and recommends minimum distances from upstream signals for independent signal control in various operating environments. The timing of vehicle actuated signals is discussed, based on the results of a simulation analysis. The results for a field validation study on the NETFLO traffic network simulation program are described. Based on the results it is concluded that the program can be used with confidence in the evaluation of vehicle actuated signal networks.
