As part of an assessment of the performance improvement potential of tandem propellers, preliminary design studies were made to compare efficiencies of tandem propellers with conventional propellers over a wide range of merchant ship types, sizes, powers, and speeds. Eight sets of ship requirements were selected to cover the range of interest, and comparisons were made, based on Wageningen B-Series propellers. The sensitivities of propeller efficiency to major tandem design variables, such as RPM, diameter, number of blades, phasing, axial spacing, load split, and strength were assessed.
