A design methodology, based on the heuristic modelling technique was developed; it was computerized for automated design. The methodology is composed of three major algorithms; the facility sizing algorithm, the load assignment algorithm, and the facility layout algorithm. The facility sizing algorithm determines the minimum amount of real space which must be supplied (the corollary is the maximum utilization of that space). The load assignment algorithm assigns loads (flights or parts of flights) to the facilities in such a way that the transport cost, expressed as the sum of the products of passenger flow times distance, is at a minimum. The facility layout algorithm locates the facilities relative to each other in such a manner that the transport cost is also at a minimum. The process returns to the load assignment algorithm for a new assignment of loads to see if the transport cost can be reduced. If so a, layout is produced and again checked for a possible cost reduction. This iteration continues until an optimum design has been obtained. (Author)
