A laboratory investigation was conducted into the feasibility of employing laser light depolarization as a measure of pavement surface textures. Pavement cores representing different conditions of wear were employed in the investigation, as were newly formed concrete slabs especially prepared for the tests. Results show that the laser technique is sensitive to the pavement textural characteristics. Comparison with independent frictional data and conventional textural data on the same samples indicates generally good correlation with the laser data. The conclusion is that the laser concept is feasible and offers a potentially attractive method for obtaining real-time measurements of pavement surface textures from a moving vehicle.
