Soviet naval armament has changed radically. It is now based on various types of missiles: ballistic, winged, antiaircraft, antisubmarine, and also long-range homing torpedoes. There are still conventional weapons aboard ships, but only the most advanced models. Modern naval artillery has a high rate of fire, range, accuracy, and universal capability for firing against naval and air targets. Mines now carry a more powerful charge and are safeguarded with anti-sweeping devices. The available power of a submarine in comparison with prewar models has increased almost a hundred times, the submersion depth has increased more than 5 times, and the submerged speed, 3-4 times. There have also been great developments in the various means for searching for, detecting, and destroying submarines and mines. Naval aviation today is equipped with powerful rocket-carrying aircraft, antisubmarine aircraft, and helicopters. Shore units are now armed with guided missiles and are capable of striking at a great distance from the shore. (Author)
