Hydrodynamic side force and yaw moment coefficients of merchant ships are computed using formulae developed for submersibles, but modified for free surface wall effects. The ship is represented as a combination of a body of revolution, a distribution of fixed and movable fin areas, and propellers. Thin regions of the ship hull are treated as fins, and the remainder is treated as a body of revolution. Propellers, rudders, and skegs are treated separately in conformance with actual ship geometry. Computed results are not sensitive to the definition of thin so long as it implies that the section width is a small percentage of the maximum beam, say less than 10%. The computed coefficients for the derivatives of force and moment with respect to sideslip velocity, yaw angular velocity, and rudder angle are compared with available captive model test data for various ship forms.
