Due to the developments in digital flight control technology, it is to be expected that full-time artificial stabilization will be used in future transport aircraft. A study was undertaken to provide a contribution to the establishment of quantitative handling qualities criteria for such future aircraft. A treatise on quantitative criteria for future aircraft is given, based on the results of manned simulation experiments using a ground-based and an in-flight simulator. A number of combinations of aircraft and rate-command/attitude-hold flight control systems was evaluated. Maneuver- enhancement systems were incorporated in some of the combinations. Two groups of criteria are distinguished in the analysis of the results: criteria based on the dynamic characteristics of the aircraft alone and criteria based on the dynamic characteristics of the pilot/aircraft closed-loop system.
