Rheostatic control of dc traction motors has been in use for several decades. With the advent of power electronics, however, more efficient alternate propulsion systems have been developed. These include chopper controls, ac drive with induction motors, systems using onboard energy storage and ac drive with tubular axle motors. Of these concepts, chopper controllers have been in regular revenue service for several years while others are still under prototype testing. This report is a technology review of advanced traction systems. It is based on information and data gathered from propulsion equipment suppliers in Europe, Japan, and the United States. The report describes in detail the status of all these propulsion systems. The performance characteristics, the significant advantages and disadvantages and the deployment of the hardware in revenue srvice for all these systems is discussed. The report concludes with a general description of alternate traction motors and power converters.
