SOHO is a mission of international cooperation between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). SOHO will observe the Sun continuously and uninterrupted from the Ll Lagrangian point. With a prime mission of two years SOHO will improve our understanding of the origin of the solar wind by investigating the solar interior structure and dynamics, the solar corona, and the solar wind composition. The SOHO satellite was designed and developed by Matra Marconi, under contract to ESA. It will be launched by Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services (LMCLS), under contract to NASA, on an Atlas II AS expendable launch vehicle (ELV) in December 1995. The SOHO payload includes scientific instruments provided by U.S. and European scientists. NASA will also provide mission and science operations, together with tracking, commanding, data acquisition and archiving. ESA is responsible for overall mission management and will provide for data archive and distribution.
