This executive summary report presents the major results of a comprehensive study program to evaluate the technological and economic feasibility of utilizing open- and closed-cycle gas turbines to provide lightweight propulsion power for future Navy surface ship applications. The level of technology considered in this study is that judged by the Contractor to be available during the 1990's. Naval ship types which could benefit from implementing lightweight propulsion systems were identified and characterized, and applicable propulsion system configurations and power levels compatible with component capabilities were selected. Extensive parametric analyses were made of the performance, weight, and cost characteristics for the baseline propulsion systems, from which the total propulsion-system-plus-fuel weight was then estimated. The payload capabilities and endurance limitations with open- and closed-cycle gas turbine propulsion systems for selected ship types are presented.
