The report contains the results of a side impact crash test involving a 1985 Dodge Colt and a breakaway slipbase luminaire support. The test was performed at the Federal Outdoor Impact Laboratory (FOIL) located in McLean, Virginia. The automobile impacted the pole at 39.8 mph (64.1 km/h) on the driver's side door. The impact location was aligned with the side impact dummy's shoulder with the seat in the midtrack position. The slipbase bolt clamping loads were 14 kips (62.3 kN) and the release mechanism activated upon impact. Although both the calculated hypothetical occupant impact velocity and subsequent ridedown deceleration values were well within their acceptable limits, the dummy's Thoracic Trauma Index (TTI) and Head Injury Criterion (HIC) values, 17,776 and 413 respectively, were well above allowable values. The result is that this impact would almost certainly result in a fatality.
